"The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden" by Catherynne Valente
A young orphan girl with an odd, dark ink tattoo on her eyelids has been abandoned and wanders a garden alone, until a young boy from the palace from which she has been banished makes his way into that garden. She begins telling him story after story, each one related to the next and intertwined with the others. In each of the stories, the girl and the young boy become better and better friends, and more and more involved in one another’s lives.
