Olive Fremstad was born in Stockholm, Sweden on March 14, 1871.  She was adopted by an American family and when she was 10 she moved with them to Minneapolis, Minnesota.  She demonstrated a great talent for playing the piano from an early age, and began singing in church choirs during her teenage years.  In 1890 Fremstad began receiving vocal training in New York, and then studied under Lilli Lehmann in Berlin.  In 1895 she performed in her first opera as Azucena in Verdi’s Il Trovatore at the Cologne Opera.  After that, she continued to perform in Vienna, Munich, Bayreuth and London.

From 1903 until 1914 Fremstad was featured at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, with her first role being Siegelinde in Die Walkure.  She had a specialty for Wagnerian roles, and was considered a dramatic soprano.  After 351 shows, she had her last performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1914.  She performed in public for the last time in 1920, and died on April 21, 1951.
