Moses
Biblical Hebrew religious leader and prophet
Moses came from the Levite tribe of Israel, having descended from Jacob and his wife Jochebed. He was part of the second generation of Israelites that were born in Egypt, and it was during this time that the Egyptian Pharaoh commanded that all male infants be killed by drowning in the Nile River. However, his mother sent him adrift on the Nile in a small basket. Pharaoh’s daughter, Thermuthis, saw the basket while she was bathing with her handmaidens, and she decided to adopt the baby and named him Mosheh or Moses.
Upon reaching adulthood, Moses realized that his brethren were enslaved by the Egyptians and that they were victims to much suffering and humiliation. Shortly after, God revealed himself to Moses on Mount Sinai in the form of a burning bush. He instructed Moses to go to Egypt and deliver the Israelites from bondage. After the ten plagues, Pharaoh ordered the Israelites to leave Egypt in what came to be known as the Exodus. Thus began the long journey eastward across the Red Sea and the desert towards the Promised Land. When they arrived at Sinai, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, which became the foundation of the Old Testament.
