Larry Ellison was born on August 17, 1944 in New York City to Florence Spellman.  Spellman, nineteen years old and an unwed mother, asked her aunt and Uncle, Lillian and Louis Ellison, to adopt her son and he went to live with them in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood when he was nine months old.

Ellison enrolled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He withdrew after his sophomore year, upon not taking his final examinations when his mother passed away.  He then spent the summer in northern California, and enrolled in the University of Chicago for the fall semester.  After one semester at the University of Chicago, in which he was introduced to computer programming, Ellison permanently moved to northern California.

In 1977 he helped found Oracle Corporation, one of the current leading suppliers of software for information management, and now serves on the Apple Computer board.  He is identified as one of the richest people in the United States and has also has been named a recipient of Harvard Business School’s Entrepreneur of the Year.  He is currently married to his fourth wife, Melanie.
