French poet and dramatist

Jean Racine was born on December 22, 1639 in La Ferte-Milon (Aisne), France. After being orphaned at the age of three, he was left in the care of his grandmother, who made sure that he received a classical education. He studied at Port Royal, where he was greatly influenced by their Jansenist beliefs. After graduation he went to Paris where his unique tragedies quickly brought him fame. Some of his most notable writings include Andromaque, Bajazet, and Athalie. Along with Moliere and Corneille, Jean Racine is recognized as the most influential dramatists of 17th century France.
