Ingrid Bergman
Actress
(1915-1982)
Ingrid Bergman was born to Justus Samuel Bergman and Friedel Adler Bergman in Stockholm, Sweden on August 29, 1915. Her mother died when she was only three years old, and when she was thirteen, her father passed away as well. At that time she was sent to live with one of her aunts, who died several months later, and then to another aunt and uncle with whom she lived until she turned seventeen.
While she was attending the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, she was hired at a Swedish film studio, and thus left the Royal Dramatic Theatre after only one year. Her first film role was a small part in Munkbrogreven (not counting her part as an extra in the 1932 film Landskamp). Throughout her career, she starred in films like Casablanca, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Gaslight, and won three Academy Awards, two Emmys and one Tony Award. According to the American Film Institute (AFI), Ingrid Bergman is the fourth greatest female star of all time.
