Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Psychoanalyst/Author
Clarissa Pinkola Estes was born on January 27, 1945 in Indiana and was raised around the Great Lakes area. Her parents were mestizo migrant workers who, being illiterate, raised her in an oral and ethnic tradition. For unknown reasons, when she was four years old, she was adopted by an immigrant couple from Hungary, who also could not read or write. She continues to be a cantadora today, sharing both Mexican and Hungarian stories and traditions.
Estes received a doctorate in both Intercultural Studies and Clinical Psychology and has practiced psychology for over 36 years, serving as a post-trauma specialist and working from the Jungian perspective. She is known for work with war veterans, prisons, sites of natural disasters, and more recently the Columbine High School incident. She has authored multiple books and frequently makes appearances at universities. Estes currently divides her time between living in Colorado and Wyoming.
